Owen Corey Postmortem
Howdy, I'm Owen Corey, and I programmed the warrior character for this project.
I spent about 4 hours making the character base and data tables, 12 hours creating the character abilities, 4 hours interfacing it with the game UI, and 4 hours implementing animations and audio. Overall, that adds up to about 24 hours.
If there were anything that I'd want to do better, it'd have to be making sure that the characters are using the same logic or, at the very least, in active communication to ensure that there is a shared vision. What ended up happening was that the Warrior and Wizard are two different characters rather than offshoots of the same base blueprint. This created the issue where implementation of certain interfaces, the UI especially, resulted in one character being left out and having to create an entirely new solution just so that it could interface with what was already established with the other character, and I had to drop any amount of modularity that I had built up. Luckily, everyone was good about setting up their scripts, so the redundant work was minimal; however, that doesn't excuse the redundant work.
Second, I hadn't touched much of Unreal's animation system and made a gross overestimation in my ability to understand it within the time we had to work on this project. Had I know this, I would've much earlier asked for help in understanding the animator rather than right before it needed to be done.
That being said, I did learn a lot about the animator, and I do think that I have a much better understanding of how it works for future projects. The modularity that I had programmed before having to scrap it also worked wonders when it was still implemented and I have already been able to add it to other works.
I'm most proud of how the warrior feels to play. While the animation and audio aren't great, I think that the base is really solid and could easily stand on its own. I'm sure that the cooldowns could also be tweaked to feel a little bit faster, but overall, it feels really nice being able to zip around with the dash and then clear an area with the spin ability, and so on.
