Set-Dressing, QA, and More
What's the deal with this guy?
My name is Cole Tourney, and in this project I handled asset collection, limited QA, and set-dressing the pushed levels in the game.
Project Difficulties:
The largest difficulty by far that I had this project was finding appropriate asset packs. Up until (unfortunately) crunch time, I believed that an asset pack that we'd found at the start of the project would be enough to carry me through MOST of the dressing. All of the large-scale stuff at the very least. This was very much not the case. While the pack labeled itself as "modular", it was not. This left me scrambling to pick up the pieces and throw together some jigsaw of an asset pack to use on the project. Fab, Sketchfab, and any other free asset site became my best friends. It wasn't until the end that another member of the group mentioned that they'd acquired a new, much more modular asset pack
and was going to use it to build on what we'd already placed.
Another difficulty that I'd run into was, much by my own design, time management. Right in the middle of the project, the group attended GDC in San Francisco. Whether it was my own anxieties about both the project and this event, or just a lack of time in the day between attending conferences and day-to-day life, work didn't get done on the project.
Lessons Learned
The biggest thing that I've learned over the length of the project is the importance of having a good, modular asset pack, or at the very least a single 3d artist on your team.
I think that the team did a decent job of communicating what we felt was possible within the scope of our abilities and time. Having said that, I think that better time management would benefit me greatly. I know now that I will keep "running into a brick wall" when it comes to a problem, and ignore the other responsibilities that may end up fixing my problem anyway.
A look forward to next time
I'd say that I am proud of the work that my team put into the project. I think we delivered a fun experience, and one that I think we're excited to keep building on in the future. I'm proud that I've learned more about ruin-based set-dressing and I'm excited to keep improving!
